The garden has been divided into six distinct areas beginning with
the Sun Terrace which is quite formal in style, leading through a
pergola to the Lawn Garden which is also in a formal shape but gradually
becomes more informal with the Long Walk through the Wild-flower
Meadow, the Sports Area, Orchard and finally the Woodland.
Garden Room One: The Sun Terrace
Decking - The garden begins with an interesting shaped decked area
where the axis has been swung at 45 degrees which adds width to
this long, rectangular garden. The timber boards have been laid
with strong directional lines drawing the eye into the centre of
the terrace, adding interest to this static area.
Trellis – the Sun Terrace is completely enclosed with a pretty
trellis screen, the benefits of which are threefold. Firstly, it
will provide additional privacy. Secondly, on the opposite side,
the vehicular access needs to be concealed as this will be a bare,
lifeless area letting down the style of the Sun Terrace. Thirdly,
it will “anchor” the pergola to the terrace and finally,
will enclose the Sun Terrace giving a private, courtyard, enclosed
feeling to this area.
Raised beds - The rounded timber posts are set at varying heights
to give movement and interest and provide attractive tiered planting,
including cascading plants. This softens the walls and brings the
plants to eye level – making for a better view of the planting
from inside the conservatory. Extra special attention has been given
to the planting around the sun terrace with lots of colourful planting
for all year round interest.
Pergola Walk - The pergola provides an exciting entrance to the next
part of the garden and creates a dark “closed-in” feeling
as you walk under it, making the garden opening up at the other end
seem all the more spacious and welcoming, adding atmosphere and enhancing
the senses, funnelling the view of the rest of the garden.
Garden Room Two: The Lawn Garden
Boardwalk - A raised decking, pier effect boardwalk with vertical
supports showing adds interest to this utility area. Continuing the
decking path under the pergola and to the shed creates interest when
viewed from the Sun Terrace “where does that path lead?” etc.
Washing line – this has been hidden behind planting in order
that the garden experience is not disturbed by reminders of household
chores!
Double Octant Lawn – The lawn shape funnels and opens again
in the centre and is an interesting shape which concentrates the
eye making a strong statement.
Garden Room Three: The Wild-Flower Meadow
Compost heap – The compost has been situated in the centre
of the formal gardens and is screened from view by taller planting.
The long walk - A winding path through large shrubs attractive to
wildlife (ie, Buddlea and Berberis) has been designed to slow the
walker down so as to enjoy the garden experience.
Meadow grass – This area has an air of romantic seclusion,
hidden behind the planting
Second patio area – a circular paving feature fits in well
in this area, repeating the soft contours of the ellipse shaped sports
field and winding Long Walk. Sited here, it gives dappled shade and
surrounded by planting provides a cosy, secluded place to sit for
quiet moments in the garden.
Garden Room Four: The Sports Garden
Lawn shape – you can still have an attractive looking sports
pitch – it doesn’t have to be a muddy patch of uninteresting
lawn! The soft ellipse shaped lawn creates a central focus within
the garden which is softly enclosed by tough plants which tolerate
being battered by a football or those which will re-grow from the
root if broken or snapped off. Once the football team have grown
up (and accepted a transfer!), this part of the garden will still
be an interesting place to visit.
Seating area – a place for match spectators.
Willow tunnel – This is a leafy tunnel with a wild, jungle
feel creating an exciting hiding place and entrance to the next part
of the garden.
Trampoline – concealed by planting
Hide-away – changing room or sports pavilion
Garden Room Five: The Orchard
Various fruit trees (apples, cherry, pear etc) set in meadow grass
and bluebells with a mown path to the Woodland beyond. This is also
an ideal location for a hammock strung between two trees for lazy
moments in the garden.
Garden Room Six: The Woodland Garden
