Project Three:

This garden is wide and shallow and has been designed
to achieve a greater sense of space and distance with three different
areas to visit within the garden.
The existing rear boundary hedge is used to masquerade as an internal
garden division, implying that this is just the first of many successive
compartments: a kitchen garden, an area for al fresco dining and
an area to read and relax, with soothing sound from the water feature.
In the Kitchen Garden, the pergola is an architectural feature in
itself and is used for growing climbing vegetables, with herbs in
between and provides a wonderful view from the kitchen window. A
focal point viewed through the pergola at the end of the vista enhances
the composition.
In the next garden compartment, the axis has been swung by 45 degrees
giving an illusion of greater width, emphasised by the brick detail
within the paving. A reclaimed timber gate is positioned on the boundary
where ivy has been trained to partly conceal it, giving the impression
of an entrance to another “secret” part of the garden.
A second trellis screen divides the third part of the garden where
a wildlife pool gives many hours of enjoyment watching frogs, newts,
dragonflies and fish going about their daily business! The shape
of the pool reflects the shape of the adjacent courtyard and brick
edging throughout provides unity, tying all the separate areas together.
