An Open Plan Coastal Garden

The garden is on a development of new houses with covenanted open-plan gardens. Privacy is therefore an important part of this garden.

The Sun Terrace immediately outside the house has trellis panels at a height of 4ft which provides privacy when in a seated position, but allows the rest of the garden to be seen over the top of the trellis from a standing position inside the house.

The existing paving is retained and new paving is laid at an angle which is emphasized geometrically, creating an illusion of more space by drawing the eye from side to side The new paving creates two “rooms” in a square shape which works well with the existing square paving. Carpet Stones work well in this space as they are perfectly in scale with the garden and are broken up with slabs to match those near the house, set in a pattern to add interest. Raised beds divide the two areas and add height and movement and provide plenty of scope for attractive salt-tolerant tiered planting including flowers cascading over the walls. This additional height of the raised beds adds an extra dimension to the garden, preventing it from appearing too flat, as well as giving more privacy. Two archways balance the design at the end of the garden: one arch leads to the gate and the other a seat for the afternoon sun. Planting pockets are created in the existing paving to soften this area and provide for climbing plants over the kitchen doors.
