A Small Town Garden
The garden was therefore divided into separate
areas or “rooms” each
having their own distinct character which counteracted the directional
pull of the corridor shape of this long, narrow garden.
The design is anchored by octant shaped paving
which provides lots of interesting floor shapes with it’s
yellow and grey markings which were chosen to work with the yellow
walls of the house. The centre stone was removed and replaced with
tile detail, the terracotta colour of which blended with the brick
walls in the garden. The Sun Terrace has a cosy, sheltered feel
created by the raised beds encompassing it and this also raised
the height of the planting to allow an all year round view of the
plants. The raised beds were constructed in brick to tie in with
the existing brick boundary walls. An archway at the entrance to
the second area of the garden frames the view of the garden and
has been clothed in scented climbing plants. The winding path between
the raised beds is made from the Octant segments and set against
slate chippings provides a good contrast, adding further interest
and texture. At the end of this area is an avenue of dwarf conifers
leading the eye to a focal point at the far end of the garden.
The side passage has been paved with the inner segments of the Octant
set in a pattern which draws the eye from side to side thereby adding
movement which has been inter-planted with shade tolerant leafy ferns
adding further interest to this small area.
